Mexico City, April 03 (teleSUR-RHC) The Ecological Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) was fined on Thursday by the Mexican electoral authority for distributing propaganda printed on material that was deemed to be unfriendly to the environment.

The Judicial Electoral Tribunal of the Federation (TEPJF), specialized court that handles electoral disputes, determined that the PVEM distributed 4 million calendars with the party's logo that were printed on material that was not biodegradable nor recyclable, a violation of Mexico's electoral code.

The Greens will have to pay a $12 million fine as a result of violations of the electoral code.

The party, founded in 1986, has always been under the control of one family. The first president was Jorge Gonzalez Torres who was succeeded by his son, Jorge Emilio Gonzalez. The party is closely aligned with the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

Political analysts have accused the PVEM of being the attack dog of the PRI. Throughout its history it has been repeatedly fined by electoral authorities for violations of the electoral code.
