Havana, June 18 (RHC)— A solemn ceremony was held on Monday at Colon Cemetery in the Cuban capital, on the occasion of the 114th anniversary of the death of the General-in-Chief of the Cuban Independence Army, Maximo Gomez.

The leader of the Cuban Communist Party, Raul Castro Ruz, and president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, were on hand for the observance held in front of the memorial where the remains of the famous patriot, born in the Dominican Republic, are buried.

A wreath was placed in front of the tomb on behalf of the people of Cuba.

During the ceremony, the Historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal, with his eloquent oratory, described important moments of the life of General Gómez, among whose attributes he mentioned the iron will that characterized him.

“Gómez is really a paradigm of service to the nation, and to its people. As Fidel once exclaimed: he was an internationalist fighter, a man who when he arrived in Cuba, to this tiny island, he believed he did so on behalf of humanity. That sense of humanity was in his heart,” said Leal.
