Camilo Cienfuegos

Havana, October 28 (RHC)—Cuba is observing this Wednesday of the 61 anniversary of the disappearance of legendary revolutionary comandante Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriaran.

Camilo was one of the expeditionaries of the Granma Yacht and one of the most outstanding leaders of the Rebel Army that overthrew the pro-imperialist dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista on January 1, 1959.

He was an inseparable friend of Ernesto Che Guevara. His courage made the people spontaneously grant him the honorary title of Hero of Yaguajay and Lord of the Vanguard.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Rebel Army, a position from which he was in charge of the arrest of Hubert Matos after the attempted uprising in Camagüey.

The plane in which he was traveling disappeared on October 28, 1959, during a trip from Camagüey to Havana, and it was never found.

Every year on this day, Cubans bring flowers to the sea and rivers as a demonstration of deep feelings of admiration and recognition of the legendary fighter.

Considering the current COVID-19 restrictions, the Party's leadership decided that the commemorations this year should be carried out so that the traditional pilgrimage with a concentration of people is not promoted.
