Brussels, June 7 (RHC)-- The Cuban Embassy in Belgium says a debate introduced by some right-wing MEPs to address alleged human rights violations on the island in the European Parliament is a farce.

"If the European Parliament decides to discuss Cuba, the debate would necessarily have to refer to the massive, flagrant, and systematic human rights violation of the entire Cuban population, resulting from the genocidal, immoral, and illegal blockade imposed by the United States for some 60 years," the diplomatic mission said in a press release.

According to the diplomatic mission to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union (EU), it is worth asking whether the initiative's promoters would be willing to demand Washington to cease that policy intensified by Donald Trump's administration and its devastating economic consequences.

'Are they likewise willing to defend the European natural and legal persons affected by the growing extraterritoriality of the blockade? Will they ask their US counterparts to repeal the Helms-Burton Act?' asked the Cuban Embassy.

Eurodeputies from right-wing groups such as Renew Europe and the European People's Party managed to introduce in the plenary assembly scheduled for Tuesday a draft resolution with accusations on human rights against the Caribbean country, a maneuver that the Embassy considered shameful.

In that sense, the Embassy stressed that European voters and the international community would expect objectivity and impartiality from the European Parliament, instead of selectivity, double standards, and complicit silence on human rights violations such as racism, discrimination, and the growing xenophobia present in the Old Continent.
