Havana, Sep 18 (RHC) On Saturday, the Cuban Electrical Union reported the progressive recovery of electricity generation in eastern provinces that were left without service due to a breakdown in one of the country's main lines.

According to the company, a breakage in the conductor of the Nuevitas-Holguín line caused an oscillation in the voltage that resulted in the output of plants and blocks of the system.

This caused the interruption of service in Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Guantanamo, as well as in some parts of central and western Cuba.

Engineer Jorge Armando Cepero, general director of Unión Eléctrica, told national television that emergency measures were applied with distributed generation groups.

The causes of this failure in the 220 thousand volts transmission line are still under investigation.

Since last June 21, Cuba has been presenting difficulties in the generation of electric service due to failures in thermoelectric plants which have been in operation for more than 35 years.

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Liván Arronte, explained that the financial limitations caused by the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States and Covid-19 have hindered the execution of capital and partial maintenance of plants, as well as the completion of important investments.
