Havana, January 27 (RHC) Cuban students will stage tonight the traditional March of the Torches in honor of the birthday of National Hero José Martí, on January 28.

The vice president of the University Student Federation (FEU), Daniel Alejandro Medina, told the local press that on this occasion, the event would be held under the slogan "I carry my youth on fire," from the steps of the University of Havana to the Martí Forge.

According to Medina, the occasion will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Young Communist League, the centennial of the FEU, and the 76th anniversary of the admission of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro to the University of Havana.

He stressed that the walk would also be dedicated to Cuban science and the feat achieved against Covid-19.

The first March of the Torches was organized for midnight of January 27, 1953, to await the 100th birthday of José Martí.

According to historical research, the walk also became an act of protest against the crimes of dictator Fulgencio Batista, in power after the 1952 coup d'état,  and the persecution of young people who sought to change the political course of the island.
