Cuba celebrates July 26

Cienfuegos, July 26 (RHC)-- Cuba celebrates today National Rebellion Day, on the 69th anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes military fortresses in eastern Cuba.

At dawn on Tuesday, the central ceremony for the anniversary will be held at the Plaza de Actos in the central-southern city of Cienfuegos, where some 10,000 people will gather to represent the more than 400,000 inhabitants of the territory.

On July 26, 1953, a group of young people led by Fidel Castro, later identified by history as the Centennial Generation (of National Hero José Martí), led the insurrectional actions in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo.   The setback of the military actions, according to Fidel Castro, would become a political victory as it represented the small engine that would start the big engine -- the Revolution.

The day before, the President of the Republic and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, Miguel Díaz-Canel, made an extensive tour of economic and social objectives in the city of Cienfuegos, 240 kilometers southeast of the capital.

The revival of a neighborhood in vulnerable conditions, a mini-industry in the agricultural sector, a secondary school and the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes thermoelectric plant, one of the most efficient in the country, were part of the itinerary of the head of state.

Díaz-Canel held a meeting with some 200 solidarity activists from Puerto Rico and the United States, grouped in the 32nd Pastors for Peace Caravan, the Juan Rius Rivera and Venceremos brigades and the Socialism and Liberation Party.

At the end of the eve of the great revolutionary commemoration, the Tomás Terry Theater staged a cultural salute to the heroic deed led by Fidel Castro in 1953, the show "Cienfuegos, Dreams and Hopes", which was attended by the President and other high authorities.
