Last September 27, Ian crossed the province of Pinar del Río causing severe damage to that territory

Havana, Oct 4 (RHC) The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his confidence in the speedy recovery of the Cuban provinces that were most affected by the passage of the intense hurricane Ian through the western part of the country.

In his Twitter profile, the president said:

Last September 27, Ian crossed the province of Pinar del Río from the south, with category three on the Saffir-Simpson scale (out of a maximum of five), and caused severe damage in that territory, as well as Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque, and the special municipality Isla de la Juventud.

Its sustained winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall destroyed plantations, and houses, caused serious damage to the economic infrastructure and basic services, and collapsed the national power generation for several hours, among other damages yet to be quantified.

After the passage of Ian, the nation began an intense recovery effort with the support of workers from other territories, countries such as Venezuela and Mexico, as well as several international organizations.

As of this morning, in Pinar del Río, the province most affected, with 53,401 houses damaged and 5,064 total landslides identified, while 6,780 people remain evacuated in protection centers.

It was possible to reestablish 10.4 percent of electricity, whose networks were devastated by the weather event, as well as 52 percent of communications. (Source: PL)
