International José Martí Prize.
Havana, January 24 (RHC) UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, Gabriela Ramos, will present today at the opening of the Fifth International Conference for the Balance of the World, the José Martí International Prize, an award instituted by the multilateral organization in 1994.
The award is of great relevance because "it tells us who we are, how we relate to each other, the way we live our freedom and build our countries," said UNESCO´s representative during the first day of her visit to the island.
This award recognizes personalities with important contributions to the unity and integration of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The prize endorses the usefulness of Marti's thought and its validity, "because, in the end, this is what nourishes us as human beings in a way of building bridges," she added.
Likewise, the recognition praises the work in the preservation of the identity, cultural traditions, and historical values of the region, in coherence with the values of Martí, who "represents the idea of good, and whose thought stimulates the joint search for solutions to the great problems of the contemporary world", the invitation to the event points out.
The forum, which is being held at the Havana Convention Palace, is scheduled to last until January 28, inspired by the legacy of Cuba’s National Hero, 170 years after his birth.
The deputy director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is visiting several institutions. She began with a tour of the historic center of Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official website.
She also talked with the director of the Casa de África Museum, Alberto Granado Duque; the president of the Fernando Ortiz Foundation, Miguel Barnet; Dulce Maria Buergos, head of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO; and Isabel Hernandez Campos, director of the San Severino Castle Museum in Matanzas.
Issues such as gender equity, efforts in favor of inclusion and against racial discrimination, and support for youth stand out among the priorities of Ramos' administration, who will be in Cuba until January 25. (Source: PL)
