Havana, February 13 (RHC)-- The Cuban Electrical Union reported Monday a failure in the national electric power system that caused a blackout in half of the country.

The entity explained that the incident was caused by a problem in the 220-kilowatt network between the towns of Sancti Spiritus and Nuevitas (Camagüey province), which caused the disconnection of the Electric System in the Central-Eastern area.

The information did not specify the cause of the failure or the duration of the works to solve it, but it is confirmed that customers in the provinces of Ciego de Avila (center) to Guantanamo, in the eastern part of the island, will be affected.

This month, authorities of the Union and the Ministry of Energy and Mines developed maintenance actions in the generating stations to increase the power values given the summer season.
