International project in pursuit of Cuba's food sovereignty

Havana, July 14 (RHC) The region with the greatest livestock potential in Cuba continues the development of the international collaboration project Improvement of cow's milk production potential, led by the University of Camagüey.

The sponsorship of professionals from the Ministry of Agriculture has led to progress in a plan based on the introduction of a health management program in dairy herds, especially in the municipalities of Jimaguayú, Najasa, Guáimaro and Sibanicú.

Financing from the Flemish Inter-university Council-University Development Cooperation, from Belgium, has been key to actions that include the use of automatic data collection systems.

The digital portal of Radio Cadena Agramonte explains that this scientific technique is carried out through the placement of intelligent electronic collars and tags on the animals, which have an electronic device inside that monitors the physical activity of the cow; and is considered by experts a reliable indicator of zeal. In turn, technology provides results with respect to feeding behavior, rumination and inactivity of each animal.

The Cuban Ministry of Agriculture also places great hopes in the short term on the international Livestock Development Project, which is financed by the French Development Agency.

With an extension date in a first phase until May 2024, the program covers four municipalities in the central-eastern region, the one with the highest milk contribution to the country. (Source: PL)
