Modern technology is installed in hydrological stations in Cuba

Havana, Jul 21 (RHC) The installation of modern equipment in hydrological stations today shows benefits in the Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila, by being able to measure more accurately in real time the reserve levels of drinking water in aquifers and reservoirs.

Through the Euroclima Plus international project, financed by the French Development Agency and promoted by the European Union, 17 systems are operating in Ciego de Ávila with the new devices in charge of checking the levels of the wells and recording rainfall, to achieve a better use of the liquid.

The coordinator of the program in the territory, Rafael González-Abreu, pointed out that they also placed a rain gauge in Ruspoli, one of the main sources of water supply in the capital city, to measure rain, its intensity, frequency and duration, as well as a sensor for levels of the groundwater table.

With this combination, they will know the moment in which the underground basin begins to react to rainfall, a significant step in the investigation of groundwater and its behavior, explained the specialist.

González-Abreu added that another idea of the project is the preparation of specialists for the use of an ultrasonic flowmeter, which will be applied in hydrometry, related to the measurement of the exploitation of water resources controlled by the Hydraulic Exploitation Company in the province.

He pointed out that Euroclima Plus has the mission of reducing the impact of climate change and its effects in Latin America, through mitigation, adaptation, resilience and investment and achieving greater participation, without discrimination based on gender or any other type.

The control and preservation of groundwater in Ciego de Ávila is of great importance, since it constitutes more than 70 percent of the water resources available for the supply of its inhabitants and economic activities. (Source: PL)
