Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab has not been released since his kidnapping two years ago in the United States

Havana, Oct 16 (RHC) Voices of solidarity in Cuba today demanded the release of Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab, two years after his kidnapping in the United States.

In an event held at Havana's Casa del Alba Cultural, the Venezuelan ambassador to Cuba, Orlando Maneiro, indicated that Saab's kidnapping is a clear demonstration of the violation of international law, human rights and the Vienna convention for diplomatic relations.

He pointed out that Saab's defense team has warned on several occasions about the judicial delay against the official, as well as the lack of timely medical assistance. He highlighted that the United Nations, through special rapporteurs and experts, has asked the United States to release Saab, since his detention was described as arbitrary.

Maneiro conveyed a message of support and solidarity to the diplomat and assured that Saab is not alone in this fight, from which he will emerge victorious.

For her part, Graciela Ramírez, coordinator of the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity of Peoples, spoke about how the US prison system seeks to break the will of the detainee and does not establish a differentiation between convicted criminals and political prisoners. Ramírez delved into the seriousness of being a political prisoner in the northern nation and the constant violation of his human, judicial and consular rights.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pavel Alemán, a specialist at the International Policy Research Center, considered that the Venezuelan diplomat is a victim of a war that the United States has been waging against Venezuela for several years.

He warned that the attitude assumed in relation to Saab as a diplomatic agent puts the credibility of the international legal system at risk and is creating a very negative precedent for the diplomatic field. (Source: PL)
