Cuba Presents National Plan to Face Ebola

Havana, October 30 (RHC-PL) -- Cuba is putting into practice a comprehensive plan for the prevention and containment of a potential Ebola contagion. The strategy aims to minimize risks of introduction and transmission of the virus, assured Jose Angel Portal, First Deputy Minister of Public Health.

During a technical meeting with experts underway in the Cuban capital, Portal said the national campaign includes the reinforcement of points of entry to the country, a strict control of passengers, particularly those coming from affected regions.

Besides protection measures in workplaces and the community, where individuals take part in drills and workshops, the Ministry of Public Health is strengthening interdisciplinary actions, as well as epidemiological and hospital monitoring of the units designed for attention.

He indicated that to this end, a specialized unit has been created by the Ministry of Public Health in coordination with the National Civil Defense and other State entities. The institution has been tasked with monitoring the Ebola situation at local and international levels.

Also, the training of human resources, is an essential part of the campaign, said the official. He stressed the importance of complying with health legislation, particularly biological security and the elaboration of a comprehensive social communications program.

Participating in the meeting were health authorities from Venezuela, Uruguay, Ecuador, and Mexico, among other countries.
