Ciego de Ávila, June 18 (RHC)-- Las Coloradas in Cayo Coco, on Cuba's northern coast, has been granted the status of Environmental Beach following an evaluation by CITMA, the island's ministry in charge of Science, Technology and the Environment.

CITMA Minister Elba Rosa Pérez delivered the certification at the beach area, home to three major tourist hotels: the Pullman Cayo Coco, the Meliá Cayo Coco, and the Sol Cayo Coco. The minister noted that the hotels stand out for their effective management of the shared coastal eco-system and their integrating approach to the environmental protection of their beach fronts.

The Cuban Science, Technology and the Environment minister said the environmental beach certification was being granted to Las Coloradas in consideration of the area meeting specific requirements pertaining the sustainability of tourism, the microbiological quality of the water, and the use of local natural resources, among others.

She noted that Las Coloradas Beach features a neatly preserved profile extending from the sand dune to the underwater sand, as well as exceptional environmental protection values associated to wave energy dissipation and erosion effect reduction.
