Havana, Sept. 20 (RHC)-- A Cuban film season will be inaugurated on Tuesday, September 28th, at Cervantes Institute in Beijing, China. Organizers say the aim is to continue promoting cultural exchanges between the two nations.

For this ocassion, they have prepared a broad program that includes Cuban classical films ‘Clandestinos’, by Fernando Pérez; ‘Casa vieja’, by Lester Hamlet; ‘Nido de mantis’, by Arturo Sotto; and ‘Inocencia’, by Alejandro Gil.

Cubacine website spoke with Gil to learn first-hand how he values his film being exhibited in the Asian country.

He said ‘Inocencia’ deals with mean, selfish interests that are present in any era and society. He added that the film fully demonstrates that prevailing revenge and anger could destroy innocent lives.

Based on true events, ‘Inocencia’ recreates one of the most atrocious events in 19th century Cuba. In 1871, a class of first-year medical students were imprisoned for a crime they did not commit. Determined to smash any anti-colonial, pro-independence effort, the Spanish corrupt colonial government and its Cuban lackeys conspired to kill 8 medical students, despite failed attempts to prove them guilty.

Alejandro Gil stressed that the film pays eternal tribute to the Cuban medical students, victims of Spanish colonial rule, but also urges to confront and repeal selfish, mean interests in today’s world.
