La Colmenita

Havana, Feb. 14 (RHC)-- Cuba’s iconic Children’s Theatre Company La Colmenita celebrates its 32 anniversary this February 14th.

Children with the internationally acclaimed theatre troupe are immersed in several projects, which they plan to premiere this year. One of them is dedicated to the new family code, which Cubans are debating right now in community meetings to propose changes to it before it is debated by the Cuban parliament after which it will be subjected to a national referendum.

This new show will have its world premiere on April 7th, on a new birthday anniversary of Cuban heroine Vilma Espín.

Later, in May, La Colmenita will premiere another show entitled ‘Hay locuras para la esperanza’ inspired by a beautiful song, composed by singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez.

Yet, another show by La Colmenita, dedicated to Cuban poet Jesús Orta Ruiz –El Indio Naborí—on his 100th birthday anniversary, will have its world premiere in November.

Created on February 14th, 1990 by Carlos Alberto Cremata, the goal of La Colmenita has been to use dance, music and acting as a way to develop each child’s creativity so they can achieve their greatest potential, individually and as a group.

Named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the success of La Comenita has inspired the creation of similar children’s theatre groups in other Cuban provinces and around the world. Today, there are six in Argentina, 31 in El Salvador, 70 in Venezuela, 3 in Spain, 3 in Mexico, 6 in Nicaragua, also in Panama, Dominican Republic.

Their latest premiere last November was the show ‘Fidel habla… ¡te necesito!’ in homage to Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro.
