Casa de las Americas recalls Miguel Angel Asturias’s art

Havana, Jul 2 (RHC) With the exhibition entitled "Miguel Angel Asturias: Legends of Guatemala" and a panel in tribute to that remarkable writer, Casa de las Americas on Tuesday joined the events to celebrate the summer season in Havana.

The exhibition, at the Jose Antonio Echeverria Library, offers visitors an overview of the works of the 1967 Nobel Prizewinner in Literature, housed in this prestigious cultural institution, and a selection of images that reflect his presence in Cuba.

Earlier, Casa de las Americas organized a guided tour of its facilities and a meeting at the Manuel Galich Hall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Asturias’s death on June 9, 1974.

Jorge Fornet, director of the Literary Research Center at the Havana-based cultural institution, recently highlighted the multiple paths leading to Asturias’s work, which he considered essential to meet with his novels.

Referring to the storytelling of a man who was a member of the jury of the Casa de las Americas Literary Prize in its first edition in January 1960, the essayist mentioned the novels “El Señor Presidente” (Mister President, 1946) and “Hombres de Maiz” (Men of Maize, 1949), the latter has been acknowledged by many as his masterpieces.

The intellectual stated that Miguel Angel Asturias’s corpus is a clear and forceful response to the hegemonic globalization that threatens to erase the memory of Our America. (Source: Prensa Latina)
