Havana, August 22 (RHC) – Cubans Omar Almeida and Lennis Martinez will look this Thursday for their 4th win, respectively, in the La Vega International Open chess tournament, taking place in La Vega, Dominican Republic.
After the first three rounds of the competition, only nine players of the 95 participants have won all the matches, although the tie-braking system positions Colombians Miguel Angel Garavito and Sergio Barrientos in the 1st and 2nd positions respectively.
Omar Almeida sits 3rd after defeating also Colombian Gustavo Eduardo Nuñez in the competition’s third round, while Martinez defeated the local Jose Araujo, according to the website www.chess-results.com.
Norwegians Erlend Mikalsen and Sebastian Mihajlov, and locals Christopher Guzman, Francis Fernandez and Darvi Crispin are the rest of the unbeaten players. The other competing Cuban lost in the 3rd round to Dominican Crispin and sits now in the 14th position of the leader-board.
This Thursday, Almeida will face Mihajlov, Lennis Martinez will face Francis Fernandez and Garavito will face Barrientos.
