Cuba with 322 athletes qualified for San Salvador 2023
Havana, December 7 (ACN) - Cuba has so far 322 athletes qualified in 17 sports for the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023, according to what was revealed at the Sports City Coliseum in Havana.
José Antonio Miranda, director of High Performance of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, declared to the press that this year the qualifying events for that regional event have already closed, and 16 remain to be held in 2023.
He said that for the Central Caribbean lid, scheduled for June 23 to July 8, there are still places available in disciplines that distribute many sets of medals, such as swimming, athletics, taekwondo, judo, among others.
He also pointed out that the Cuban delegation should go to that competition with around 500 athletes, with the goal of placing second, since it seems very complicated to beat Mexico, said the director.
Miranda explained that the combat sports, i.e. boxing, wrestling, judo and taekwondo, in addition to athletics, will have the greatest options for titles and medals in general.
When referring to other disciplines that he sees with possibilities of an important contribution, he mentioned canoeing and rowing, and said that diving could give surprises.
He added that water polo, handball and field field hockey, in both sexes, should also fight for top positions, while in chess, which has eight sets of medals, there are options for several gold medals, he said.
Finally, he said that so far Cuba has 98 athletes, in 15 sports, qualified for the continental multisport event in Santiago de Chile 2023, to be held from October 20 to November 5.
