Cuba qualifies for world youth handball championship

Havana, December 17 (RHC)-- The Cuban handball team qualified on Friday for the IHF World Junior Men's Championship in Croatia 2023, by winning one of the two tickets allocated at the tournament in the Americas and the Caribbean hosted by Mexico City.

The four-letter team defeated Guadeloupe in the semifinal phase with a 36-24 score and, in addition to the qualification, won a place in the final of the event.

In the match, the Cubans had a very balanced offense, with Lisván Mora scoring six goals and Diosel Rondón, Samuel Cordiés and Maikol Vázquez scoring five.

Today, Saturday, the team coached by Jover Hernández will fight for the title against the United States, in a match in which both will expose their undefeated records in the competition.

The Antilleans have shown a fearsome offense thanks to the scoring leader in the tournament, Maikol Vázquez (27), and men like Samuel Cordiés, with 20.

An average of 38 goals per game, plus a defense that works for 23.5, makes one think of the possibilities of winning, although the North American team shows a higher level than the rivals they have faced so far. 

Winning in the final means, in addition to the gold medals, reaching the only place in dispute for the intercontinental cup of the category.
