Cuban Erislandy Alvarez

Havana, May 12 (RHC) - Three Cubans have won so far in the semifinals of the World Boxing Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and will fight for gold in the finals on Saturday and Sunday.

The fighters secured for the finals by the so-called "Flagship" of Cuban sport are the debutants Saidel Horta (57 kg), Erislandy Alvarez (60) and the also young Yoenlis Hernandez (75), who will seek to revalidate his Belgrade-2021 world crown.

Still to step into the ring to secure silver and go for the gold is Fernando Arzola (+92).

Cuba included six men in the semifinals. In addition to the three winners, and in the absence of Arzola's performance, Alejandro Claro (48) and Yosvani Veitía (54) were defeated.

Among the winners of the day, the young Erislandy was still impressive, winning by a 5-0 beating of the Jordanian Mohammad Jajeh, with even two protection counts in his favor.

For the gold medal, the young Cuban boxing talent will face French favorite Sofiane Oumiha (30 years old), two-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist in Rio 2016.)

Veitía and Claro finished in bronze, after losing to last year's runner-up, Sabyrkhan (Kazakhstan) and Alakverdovi (Georgia), the latter for no-show after failing a medical check-up due to a face injury he suffered in his first fight.
