Havana, April 29 (JIT) .- Cuban Elier Miranda put a triumphant rhythm to his farewell to seize the throne in the National Chess Championship of Veracruz, in Mexico.

The Cuban monarch of 2023 defeated his compatriot Diasmany Otero this Sunday, an outcome that allowed him to complete five points out of a possible six, thanks to four successes and a couple of draws.

Miranda, who appeared fourth in the list of the 49 players registered thanks to his Elo, took as an added prize 9.8 stripes for his coefficient. The calculation of his performance throughout the entire tournament was set at 2,581 points.

Also in Cuban hands was the second prize, after Havana native Omar Almeida closed his incursion by signing peace with local Gilberto Hernández. Thus he raised his harvest to 4.5 points and added one to his Elo.

Hernández said goodbye with a similar sum, but the tiebreaker system placed him in third place. As a consolation, he was left to add the not inconsiderable figure of 24.5 units to his Elo, which will appear reflected on the first day of May, when the world ranking is updated.

Among the rest of the Island's exponents who animated the competition, the best part went to Ricardo Reyson Rodríguez, anchored in 11th place with four units. Otero finished at 3.5, good for 16th place, while Yusuán Gutiérrez was two behind, in possession of the same total.

Both Miranda and Almeida will be among the main animators of the open group at the 57th Capablanca in Memoriam 2024 International Chess Tournament, which opens on May 2 in Havana.

Both appear as members of the national preselection and aspire to be included in the formation that will represent Cuba in the World Chess Olympiad in Budapest 2024.
