Cuban figure skater to debut in continental competition

Havana, Jul 4 (JIT) - Cuban Cristian Jesús Álvarez will make his debut today in the artistic modality of the Pan American Skating Championship of Ibagué 2024, in Colombia. 

The Pinar del Río native will compete in the style dance test scheduled in the night session, and this Friday he will return to the Main Coliseum of the Sports Park to perform in the free event. 

"In this event Cristian Jesus will face rivals of high quality, including world medalists such as Colombia's Brayan Carreño and Brazil's Erik Medziu. However, the boys are in very good spirits and are focused on the objectives they have set for themselves," Sabrina Sánchez, national skating commissioner, told JIT. 

The artistic modality of the Pan American competition began this Thursday with the presence of contestants from 17 countries.

The first categories to compete were the tots, minis, and female and male cadets, in which compulsory programs and the style dance were performed.

Representatives from Argentina, Paraguay and Colombia danced best during the initial stages of the continental competition.

The finals of the style dance in the youth, junior and senior categories, for each sex, are expected for this day.

Cuba is participating in the figure skating competition with two representatives, Iván Perugorría, 13, and Cristian Álvarez, 19. 

The specialty will conclude its actions on July 10.
