Havana, Aug 11 (RHC) - The bronze medal won Sunday by Milaimys Marín in women's wrestling brought to nine the number of medals won by the Cuban delegation at the Paris Olympic Games, which finished 32nd in the medal standings, at the forefront of Central America and the Caribbean, and in fourth place in the Americas.

Marín (76 kg) defeated 6-0 by bronze to the number one in the world ranking, Alperi Medet, from Kyrgyzstan, and conquered the second medal of Cuban women's wrestling in Paris, an unprecedented event.

With Marín's medal, Cuba closed its performance in Paris with nine medals (2-1-6), without being able to achieve its goal of placing again in the top 20.

The 61 athletes from the island who were in the French capital won medals in 4 sports of the program (wrestling 5, boxing 2, canoeing 1, taekwondo 1).

Its most significant performance took place in wrestling, where Mijaín López went down in history as the only athlete with 5 consecutive Olympic titles in the same discipline and specialty in history.

On the final day, Sunday, the victories of Jennifer Valente in the omnium of track cycling and the women's basketball team gave the United States the first place in the medal standings, equal in titles with China, but with more silver awards.

The U.S. totaled (40-44-42) and China (40-27-24).

The Americans dominated 4 sports (artistic gymnastics, athletics, swimming and basketball, in addition to sharing the lead in soccer and golf, while China reigned in eight disciplines, artistic swimming, badminton, BMX freestyle, diving, shooting, tennis, table tennis and weightlifting, and shared the lead in rhythmic gymnastics.

Japan climbed to third place with 20 golds, 12 silvers and 13 bronzes and preceded Australia (18-19-16) and host France (16-26-22).
