Havana, Aug 28 (JIT) - The tenth place of Emanuel Ramirez in the shot put marked the only Cuban presence in the finals at the start of the World Youth Athletics Championships in Lima 2024.

Enmanuel managed to pass to the medal discussion with a good shot of 19.09 meters, but in the final he barely reached 18.42 meters, in an event where the Dutch Jarno van Daalen won with a personal record of 20.76 meters.

Two other Cubans who kept their chances of winning prizes were the triple jumpers Gian Carlos Baxter and Anthony Martínez, who advanced to Thursday's final, but long jumper Dianelys Alacán and discus thrower Neilyn Rodríguez could not.

On the first day of the world championships, Ethiopian runner Medina Eisa broke the record in the women's 5,000 meters and retained her 2022 gold medal by running the distance in 14:39.71.
