Athens, May 6 (RHC)-- At least 22 people, including several children, have died after a boat and a dinghy carrying migrants capsized off the Greek coast. Some 65 migrants were en route from Turkey to Greece when their vessels went down early on Monday near the Greek island of Samos in the eastern Aegean Sea.

According to reports, rescue teams have picked up some of the survivors, but search is underway for several migrants still believed to be missing. Coast guard officials said they had rescued 36 people and recovered the bodies of 22 others.

Greece is considered as one of the main ports of entry into the European Union for people fleeing war-torn and impoverished countries in Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Some 190 migrants reportedly died or went missing in the Aegean Sea between 2012 and 2014.
