The former president of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez, died in the early hours of this Sunday.

Montevideo, December 6 (RHC)-- The former president of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez, died early Sunday morning at his home in Montevideo where he was convalescing from lung cancer detected during his second term in August 2019.

When officially reporting the death, the Presidency of the Frente Amplio declared that "with his departure Uruguay loses an outstanding scientist and a good citizen, the political system a central player during the last three decades and the Frenteamplistas a comrade whose leadership honors and commits us to move forward."

The Honorary President of the leftist force was the first of its ranks to win the elections for the Montevideo City Council, and the leadership of the country in 2005-2010 and then again in 2015-2020.

Out of consideration for the health measures in place to control the COVID-19 pandemic and out of respect for the will expressed by Tabaré Vázquez's family, no wake will be held and the burial ceremony will be private.

The political group values the feelings of solidarity of Uruguayan citizens as a whole and of the Frenteamplistas in particular and urges them to accompany from their homes and through the media the cortege that will leave from the Montevideo City Hall in the afternoon.
