Caracas, July 13 (RHC)-- The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) reported the arrest of former opposition deputy Freddy Guevara, who will be charged with the crimes of terrorism, attempt against the constitutional order, conspiracy to commit a crime and treason.

Through his account on the social network Twitter, Attorney General Tarek William Saab published a statement in which he details that members of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) were the ones who carried out the arrest.

"This Monday, July 12, the Public Prosecutor's Office has requested an arrest warrant against Freddy Guevara, who was detained by the Sebin due to his links with extremist and paramilitary groups associated with the Colombian government."

In addition, it specified that two prosecutors with national competence were appointed to carry out the investigation.  The MP reminded that Guevara has had a "public trajectory in the participation of acts of violence in the past," registered in the South American country and promoted by extremist factors of the opposition.

Guevara has been linked to the right-wing party Voluntad Popular, led by fugitive from justice Leopoldo López, and which backed the former self-proclaimed president, Juan Guaidó.  This political group has been linked on several occasions to acts of violence and destabilization plans in Venezuela.

The former parliamentarian Guevara was one of the promoters of the acts of violence registered in 2017, during the so-called guarimbas, where extremist sectors of the opposition destroyed public and private entities and infrastructure, caused several injuries and more than 100 deaths.

Given his participation in these events, he was accused of instigating these actions and requested asylum in the Chilean Embassy in Venezuela. Subsequently, in 2020, he received a presidential pardon from the government of Nicolás Maduro.

On several occasions, Guevara has made calls for illegal coercive measures against his country, which have mainly affected the population.  During the balance of Operation Gran Cacique Indio Guaicaipuro to dismantle criminal gangs in Caracas (capital), the Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, and the Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, Carmen Meléndez, also revealed that the members of these groups were linked to Voluntad Popular and the alleged participation of Freddy Guevara in these events.
