Ed Asner, great friend of just causes around the world -- including the fight for the freedom of the Cuban Five -- dies at 91

Los Angeles, August 30 (RHC)-- U.S. actor and activist Ed Asner has passed away at the age of 91.  He achieved fame with the series named after his character, Lou Grant, editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Tribune, who inspired many young people in the 70s and 80s to study journalism.

Ed Asner appeared in numerous movies and TV series.  One of the most memorable was the hit comedy “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

He was well known for his progressive views and activism -- joining the struggles of people around the world for their self-determination and sovereignty.   Among his causes were the Palestinian struggle and the Cuban Revolution.

Ed Asner’s representative in Los Angeles confirmed the actor’s death in an e-mail to The Associated Press.  Asner’s official Twitter account included a note from his children: “We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully.  Words cannot express the sadness we feel.  With a kiss on your head... Goodnight dad.  We love you.”
