UN Secretary General António Guterres will head next September 13 the high-level summit in Geneva, aimed at analyzing the growing needs in Afghanistan

United Nations, September 4 (RHC)-- UN Secretary General António Guterres will head next September 13 the high-level summit in Geneva, aimed at analyzing the growing needs in Afghanistan, local sources reported.

According to the office of the spokesman of the highest representative of the United Nations, the meeting will advocate for a rapid increase in funding aimed at maintaining the humanitarian operation in that country.

There will also be a call for full and unimpeded access to assistance, as there is an urgent need to ensure that Afghans continue to receive essential services, the statement said.

Afghanistan faces an imminent humanitarian catastrophe, with nearly half of its 38 million people in need of assistance, the statement said.

The UN Secretary-General also stressed the importance of protecting development gains in order to link the humanitarian response to medium- and long-term stability in Afghanistan. In this regard, Guterres insisted that the rights, security and well-being of women and girls are an essential part of that link.

According to analysts, Afghanistan is in worse condition than 20 years ago, when US troops invaded in a supposed anti-terrorist crusade.

In mid-August, the Taliban regained control after a war that cost billions of dollars to the United States, which only on Tuesday of this week culminated the total withdrawal of its troops from the Central Asian nation. (Source / Prensa Latina)
