Brasilia, January 25 (RHC)-- Brazil has surpassed a record 24 million coronavirus infections since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Ministry of Health of the South American country indicated that in the last 24 hours 135,080 new infections of the coronavirus were reported, as well as 296 new deaths in one day.

With these figures, Brazil totals 24,044,255 confirmed cases and 623,097 deaths due to coronavirus during the pandemic.  Health authorities warned that Brazil has had an increase in daily cases of COVID-19 since January 2nd, due to the high transmission of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

According to studies, the Ómicron variant not only caused a significant jump in the average number of infections per day, but also became the most widespread mutation in just one month.  Currently, health data indicate that Omicron is already responsible for more than 95 percent of new infections.

The rapid spread in the country caused the average number of infections to increase 43-fold in the last month, from 3,090 cases per day on December 23 to 133,350 on Saturday.
