Tegucigalpa, January 26 (RHC)-- The Observatory of Violence of the National Autonomous University of Honduras warned Tuesday that during 2021 in the Central American country, 318 women were murdered -- equivalent to a violent death or femicide every 27 hours and 33 minutes in Honduras.
The research, which covers January to October 2021, indicated that 68.9 percent of the victims were killed by firearms and 75 percent of the deaths occurred on public roads. The study also shows that 41.2 percent of the murdered women were between 30 and 59 years of age.
The study found that 10.7 percent of the murdered women were girls under the age of 17, while those between 18 and 29 accounted for 30.8 percent. Likewise, those aged 60 and older accounted for 6.9 percent.
The research details that September was the month with more femicides -- with a total of 34 -- and among the Honduran cities with the highest number of murders of women are San Pedro Sula with 28 homicides, Choloma with 14, Catacamas and La Ceiba, with ten each.
At the same time, the Center for Women's Studies of Honduras states that so far this year -- in just three weeks -- the Central American country reports 19 femicides.
