The National Civil Police of El Salvador reported on Monday that at least 14 people were killed with the passage of tropical storm Julia coming from the Atlantic Ocean and after crossing neighboring Nicaragua.

San Salvador, October 10 (RHC)-- The National Civil Police of El Salvador reported on Monday that at least 14 people were killed with the passage of tropical storm Julia coming from the Atlantic Ocean and after crossing neighboring Nicaragua.

In addition, floods, landslides and falling trees have been reported in various parts of the Salvadoran territory, whose mountainous terrain is prone to such natural events. 

Since Saturday, El Salvador has been in a state of emergency and red alert due to the passage of tropical storm Julia, whose center is located this morning 35 kilometers from San Salvador, according to the latest report of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.

The Legislative Assembly (unicameral parliament) ratified the State of National Emergency declared in all the Salvadoran territory, for a term of fifteen days, in order to establish the mechanisms of coordination and use of the means and resources of the State to attend the adverse situations that the country could suffer, as well as to mitigate the effects that could be caused by the phenomenon.

Throughout the country, reports from local authorities on emergency evacuations, floods, falling trees, among other aspects, are being reproduced.  Between 7:00 p.m. Sunday night and 3:00 a.m. Monday morning, meteorological services reported high levels of accumulated rainfall in eastern El Salvador, reaching 177 millimeters in the department of La Unión.

Meanwhile, Civil Protection authorities called on the population to collaborate with prevention, mitigation and protection efforts.
