Epidemiological surveillance is being maintained in La Zurza and assistance is being provided to the community to detect, prevent and investigate any suspected cases of the disease.

Santo Domingo, December 19 (RHC)-- The Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (Mispas) of the Dominican Republic has confirmed four new cases of cholera in the Caribbean country.  In a report disseminated through social networks, Mispas announced that these are four male patients, aged 50, 30, 23 and four years, all of Dominican nationality, residents of the La Zurza sector of the National District (center-south).

The health ministry said that the patients arrived at the health facilities on the 15th of this month, after suffering from watery diarrhea, vomiting and dry mouth, and after receiving hydration services, tests were carried out to diagnose them.

The patients remain stable, with more than 24 hours without bowel movements, and are in good physical condition. They remain hospitalized and are expected to be discharged in the next few hours, adds the Mispas report.

Health entities, together with the Directorate of Health Area IV, maintain epidemiological surveillance in La Zurza and provide assistance to the community to detect, prevent and investigate any suspected case of the disease.

In addition, monitoring and water sampling are being carried out specifically in the La Isabela river, where the presence of Vibrio cholerae bacteria, the cause of the disease, has been confirmed.

Health authorities recommend to follow the corresponding hygienic sanitary measures, such as frequent hand washing and proper washing of food, eating well-cooked food, drinking only potable water, and going immediately to the nearest health center if any diarrheal event occurs, for investigation and treatment purposes.
