Washington, January 7 (RHC)-- Former U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency analyst Ana Belen Montes was released from prison on Saturday, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

According to the information, Montes leaves the Carswell prison in Fort Worth, Texas, and will begin a five-year parole in the United States.

The 65-year-old U.S. citizen, daughter of Puerto Ricans, has been imprisoned since 2001, accused of spying for almost a decade (1992-2001), according to the trial.

According to elements of the investigation, there were complaints against Montes in 1996 for fear that she was under the influence of foreign intelligence services, but U.S. authorities did not open an investigation against her until four years later.

The FBI arrested Montes on September 21, 2001, and the justice system sentenced her to 25 years in prison in 2002, after she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit espionage.
