Organizations and personalities demand declaration of emergency for crime in Haiti

Havana, March 28 (RHC) Social organizations and political personalities denounced that the Haitian State is losing control of the territory and demanded that it declare a state of emergency in the areas controlled today by gangs.

Among the signatories are the Collective of December 4, Sant Karl Lévèque, the Haitian Council of Non-State Actors and the Collective of Lawyers for the Defense of Human Rights.
Lawyer Arnel Rémy, general coordinator of the Collective of Lawyers for the Defense of Human Rights (Caddho), claims that more than 530 people have been killed by gangs since January in Haiti.
According to the UN, violence has worsened since the assassination of the president, Jovenel Moïse, in July 2021, and the political and security climate has not improved in the country.
According to Rémy, as part of the signatories, "The State is losing control of Haitian territory, there are areas through which it is no longer possible to pass, almost all areas are controlled by armed bandits, and kidnapping cases are recurring ”.
He points to the "indifference of the Haitian State" in the fight against insecurity in the country, and deplores the "lack of means" of the police to deal with the armed gangs.
For its part, the Collective of December 4, 2013 calls for the exceptional creation of a Crisis Staff, whose main mission will be to provide concrete solutions to the problem of crime. (Source: Telesur)
