Migrants caused fire in Mexico

Havana, March 28 (RHC) The fire last night in a migrant shelter in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, was caused by the victims themselves, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported on Tuesday.

Regretting the incident and offering his condolences to the victims’ relatives, the president explained in his morning press conference at the National Palace that the fire had to do with a protest that the migrants started because they found out they were going to be deported.

At the door of the shelter, he reported, they put mattresses and set them on fire and they did not imagine that they were going to cause this terrible misfortune.

He said that the 39 dead migrants are mainly from Central America, and some from Venezuela. He indicated that there are already elements of the Attorney General of the Republic to "proceed legally."

For its part, the National Migration Institute reported that a complaint was filed with the corresponding authorities so that what happened could be investigated and, where appropriate, proceed accordingly.

In the same way, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) was given a hearing to intervene in legal proceedings and to safeguard foreigners.

It is specified that 68 men of legal age from Central and South America were staying at the immigration headquarters.

Of these, 29 more foreign migrants were injured by the incident and were transferred in delicate-serious condition to four local hospitals for immediate care. (Source: Prensa Latina)
