London, June 9 (RHC)-- The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom rejected Friday the appeal that Julian Assange's defense filed against his extradition to the United States, where he is charged for alleged conspiracy and "treason."
In a three-page decision, Judge Jonathan Swift challenged the defense's arguments against the ruling signed by then UK Home Secretary Priti Patel in June 2022.
The journalist and founder of WikiLeaks was arrested in London in 2019 after seven years in which he had refugee status in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the British capital.
After the sentence, his wife, Stella Assange, stated through her Twitter account that a new appeal request will be filed on Tuesday next week. The defense has five working days to present a 20-page appeal before a two-judge court that will convene a public hearing.
After appealing to that instance, no further appeals will be possible at the national level, but the case could be reviewed by the European Court of Human Rights.
If his extradition is not stopped, Julian Assange could face a sentence of up to 178 years in prison in the United States. (Source: Prensa Latina)
