Bolivia will bring Almagro to justice, says ambassador

Havana, June 23 (RHC) Bolivia will clarify before the courts the role of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the rupture of its constitutional order in November 2019, the ambassador of the South American country, Héctor Arce, assured today.

"It is an issue that sooner or later, whether Mr. Luis Almagro is there or not, when his mission ends, Bolivia has to take him to justice, because these issues cannot remain open," Arce said in an interview on the Bolivia TV channel about the 53 OAS General Assembly, which concludes this Friday.

Under the direction of the Secretary General of the Inter-American Forum, Almagro, an audit was carried out on the elections won by former President Evo Morales. The preliminary results were delivered to the media at dawn on November 10, 2019 and spoke of irregularities in the elections, which was later questioned by several studies by international experts.

Arce revealed to Bolivia TV that it was recently learned that in the OAS there are no standards for conducting audits like the one in 2019.

After the presentation of the report, the civic-political conflict worsened with a police mutiny and the military suggestion that the then president resign.

Faced with the torture, kidnapping and threats suffered by many of the ministers and legislators of the Movement for Socialism, Morales resigned and shortly after former senator Jeanine Áñez proclaimed herself president, for which she is now serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Days later, the Sacaba, Senkata and El Pedregal massacres occurred, with a balance of 38 deaths and hundreds of injuries, as a result of the repression against those who demanded the return of constitutional order.

Bolivia maintains in the different scenarios of the OAS the claim about the decisive influence of Almagro in the institutional breakdown of November 2019. However, so far, the claims about the audit reports have not been answered with the Secretary General's argument that "it is a closed case," criticized Arce.

The diplomat reiterated that in the 53rd general assembly the claim about the negative role of Almagro was reiterated, who instead of fulfilling his role of defending democracy, was responsible for the constitutional breakdown in Bolivia. (Source: PL)
