United Nations, September 23 (RHC)-- The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, during his intervention at the High Level Segment of the 78th UN General Assembly called for ensuring a resilient future.

In his speech, Browne addressed at length the impact of climate change on small and island nations, their inability to cope with ongoing national disasters, and the lack of funds for reconstruction.

The Caribbean leader said that small countries are sinking economically because of the burdens of environmental change, and said that the world is failing developing nations, as limited resources and low per capita income mean that loans to island states like his own are insufficient.

Gaston Browne made several calls to the international community, among them that the fund to face climate change be fulfilled, and that conflicts such as the one in Ukraine cease, since they destabilize the international system and therefore have greater repercussions on small States.

Browne called on gas-emitting countries to fulfill their commitments under international agreements, and recalled that this year the planet suffered the hottest summer in recent history.  He added that the size of the country is not an impediment to make great contributions to the planet, and that in spite of not being a developed country or one with many natural resources, its citizens had a great spirit.
