United Nations, September 22 (Mercopress-RHC) -- Following her meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez arrived in New York, where she is expected to deliver a speech at the UN’s 69th General Assembly on Wednesday.
Argentina’s dispute against its holdout creditors is expected to be a core aspect of the president’s UN presentation.
After meeting with the Pope over the weekend, the Argentinian leader spoke about the creation of a legal framework to treat sovereign debt restructuring approved by the UN two weeks ago, and stated that the overwhelming majority achieved in that vote “revealed a will in the necessity to regulate” the activities of hedge funds.
Cristina Fernandez's agenda for the week includes meetings with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, business tycoon George Soros, owner of 3.5% of YPF’s shares and a solid government ally in the hedge funds dispute, and representatives of the International Union Confederation and American Workers Union.
After her speech at the UN, she is to attend a special session of the UN Security Council headed by U.S. President Barack Obama. The president will be returning to Argentina on Thursday.
