Lima, June 11 (RHC)-- On Monday, the Peruvian Judiciary extended the term of the precautionary measure of imprisonment against former President Pedro Castillo, meanwhile an investigation is being carried out into the alleged crimes of which he is accused.

“The Judiciary extends for 14 months the period of extension of preventive detention against Pedro Castillo Terrones, accused of the crime of rebellion and others,” the Judiciary communicated on the X social network.  The court added that “the extended period of preventive detention responds to the fact that the process against the former president is in the intermediate stage.  "Measure will be computed from June 7, 2024 to August 6, 2025."

For his part, during the virtual hearing that took place last Thursday, Castillo asserted that the tax accusations made by the Prosecutor's Office against him "are more false than the eyelashes and nose of the Pinocchio who is in the (Government) Palace." », in reference to the de facto president Dina Boluarte.

«Today I am serving 18 months of preventive detention. Only in Peru, not in any other corner of the world, a president is first arrested and then dismissed (removed).  "Only with me they don't want him to have the right to my defense," Castillo said.

Previously, last February the Supreme Court of Peru rejected the appeal of former President Pedro Castillo, with which his defense sought to have his preventive detention measure reviewed.

At that time, it was determined that Castillo had served 36 months in prison, after being accused of being the alleged leader of a criminal organization that had committed alleged illicit acts during his management in the Ministry of Transportation, Provías Descentralizado, PetroPerú and the Ministry of Housing.

Regardless of the decision made by the Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation, chaired by the lawyer Juan Carlos Checkley, Pedro Castillo will continue in the Barbadillo de Lima penitentiary center, in compliance with 36 months of preventive measures imposed.
