Gaza City, June 24 (RHC)-- At least 10 Palestinians have been killed and dozens more injured as Israeli airstrikes hit residential areas in Gaza City and the Nuseirat refugee camp, bringing the number of people killed in Gaza in the last 24 hours to 56 people.

The Palestinian WAFA news agency, citing local sources, reported that eight civilians were killed and several others injured when a house in the Sabra neighborhood in southern Gaza City was struck by an airstrike on Sunday.

Also, two more civilians were killed and several residents have been injured in Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza, following airstrikes near the power station, the report added.

Al Jazeera Arabic reported that the latest attacks bring the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza in the last 24 hours to 56 people.

Israeli artillery also targeted western and southern areas of Rafah City south of the Gaza Strip, worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in the area, according to WAFA.  Reports indicate that numerous houses in the Brazil neighborhood to the south of Rafah have also been destroyed.

Moreover, local sources reported that Israeli warplanes have targeted buildings in the Shati refugee camp, killing dozens and injuring many more. The camp is where many took shelter from Israeli attacks on neighboring Jabalia eight months ago.

Shati is one of eight historic camps established in Gaza after hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced by Israel’s occupation of Palestine in 1948.

There are still thousands of Palestinians stuck under the debris of destroyed buildings.

The attacks came a day after at least 101 Palestinians were killed in a series of relentless bombings across the Gaza Strip, marking the most violent day in the enclave since Israeli troops killed 274 people while freeing four captives in Nuseirat earlier this month.

Israeli forces have continued attacks on Gaza, including Rafah in the south and Gaza City in the north.

A recent report by a United Nations-backed independent commission has revealed that the Israeli military’s deliberate use of heavy weapons during its relentless offensives in the Gaza Strip has been an “intentional and direct attack on the civilian population.”

The Israeli military “forcibly transferred almost the entire population [in Gaza] into a small enclosure that is unsafe and uninhabitable” and used heavy weapons in densely populated areas in “an intentional and direct attack on the civilian population,” said the UN commissioner, Navi Pillay as she presented the report to the UN Human Rights Council.

Israel has killed at least 37,551 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and 85,911 have been wounded since it launched its genocidal war on the territory on October 7, 2023.
