Montevideo, August 28 ((RHC)-- Former Uruguayan President José "Pepe" Mujica was admitted to a hospital in the capital of Uruguay on Tuesday, a few days after completing treatment for esophageal cancer.

Pepe Mujica, who had been undergoing radiotherapy sessions since May, was admitted to a hospital at the Medical Union of Uruguay (Casmu) Assistance Center, according to television news channel Telemundo 12.

The local media reports that according to hospital sources "it is estimated that the former president will remain hospitalized for a maximum of 48 hours."

Mujica underwent radiotherapy in recent months after a tumor was detected in his esophagus.

In an interview with the American media The New York Times published last Friday, the former head of state had referred to his state of health.

"I had radiology treatment.  According to the doctors, everything went well, but I am devastated," said Mujica, who was president of Uruguay between 2010 and 2015.

On August 26, the former president's personal physician, Raquel Pannone, said that he was having a "very good" evolution after being treated for a malignant tumor in the esophagus, despite the fact that rehabilitation "is costing him a lot."
