San Salvador, October 14 (Xinhua-RHC) -- An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Pacific off the coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua late Monday, killing at least one person.

Wilfredo Salgado, mayor of San Miguel City in El Salvador, said on his Twitter account that a man was killed when an electricity pole fell on him.

The quake struck 67 km west-southwest of Jiquilillo off the coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua at 0352 GMT Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, adding that it hit at a depth of 40 kilometers.

El Salvador's emergency services urged people living near the coast to move inland after placing a tsunami alert in effect. The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coasts located within 300 km of the epicenter.

Emergency services in neighboring Honduras and Guatemala said they had no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
