Berlin, January 5 (RHC)-- Germany has called on Greece to uphold the terms of its international bailout agreement, a day after reports showed Berlin is ready to let Athens quit the eurozone. The office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that Berlin expected Athens to stick to the terms of bailout agreement after January-25 snap elections and possible changes in the government.

Merkel has faced criticism over a report suggesting she would be prepared to let Greece exit the eurozone if the anti-austerity party, Syriza, wins the vote.

Reports emerged Saturday that Merkel and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble believe the eurozone has reached the point to see the exit of Greece without making trouble for the currency bloc, according to Der Spiegel.

The report also said that Berlin is satisfied with the progress countries like Portugal and Ireland have made in improving their economic situation.

Syriza is now leading in the latest opinion polls. Its leader Alexis Tsipras has vowed to end the "unreasonable" austerity measures imposed on his country. Greek Prime Minister Antonio Samaras has said that the upcoming elections would determine the fate of Greece's membership in Eurozone.
