San Antonio, January 21 (RHC)-- At least two people have been killed and five more injured in a shooting in the U.S. state of Texas, when gunmen opened fire on an assembly of over 100 people.

Police said on Tuesday that the incident took place on Monday night in a parking lot in the city of San Antonio, where officers found as many as 20 shell casings after the incident. Some people in the crowd may have also returned fire, according to interim San Antonio Police Chief Anthony Trevino.

Police said there was chaos at the site of the shooting, with several people brandishing guns and others throwing rocks and bottles at each other. Authorities sent some 50 police officers to restore order, but no arrests were made.

One man died from his injuries on the scene and another died while he was being taken to a nearby hospital. Two men and three women also suffered gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States. The U.S. averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of two to three billion dollars.
