Mexico City, June 5 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Violence in Mexico and the serious and staggering amount of human rights violations by government forces threaten the country's governance and democracy, warned the head of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Luis Raul Gonzalez on Thursday.

Gonzalez also told President Enrique Peña Nieto – during an event to mark the 25th anniversary of the CNDH – that Mexico is gravely affected by “torture, enforced disappearances and abuses against migrants (mainly from Central America).”

His words come only days before midterm elections are to take place across the country, a process that is not taking place as planned and will serve as the president’s first test, as he faces many scandals, including various linked to corruption.

The ombudsman added that all these problems affecting the reputation of the government led by Peña Nieto are even more aggravated by the growing presence of organized crime, which thrive on high levels of impunity.

Political experts and analysts, and history itself, has confirmed that no matter who is in power in Mexico, drug traffickers easily attain their protection.
