Kabul, June 10 (RHC)-- A powerful bomb explosion has killed five members of a family and injured a number of others in troubled northern Afghanistan, local officials say. Local Afghan officials said on Tuesday that the bomb exploded inside the house of a police officer in the Grizwan district of the northern province of Faryab.

Abdul Razaq Kakar, the governor of Grizwak district, confirmed that the dead included a police officer, his wife, son, daughter and a daughter-in-law. The official said that the two other sons of the police officers survived with injuries.

Some local residents believe that the police officer and his family may have been targeted as a result of an accidental explosion. The sources say the officer used to keep some seized bombs at the residence. Afghan law enforcement agencies have launched an inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) recently announced that about 1,000 civilians were killed across Afghanistan in the first four months of 2015 as a result of Taliban terrorist attacks. There has been a major surge in violence against civilians and government forces across Afghanistan in recent weeks.
